Helping a mom stay strong for her son

“I wasn’t just another number; I was a human being [with] Blue Cross…” says Blue Cross NC employee and breast cancer survivor Alex Shelton-Brabham. When Alex was diagnosed with breast cancer, her main concern was her son. She wanted to stay strong for him, so he could “just… be a kid.” Alex reminds us, “I survived, and I can help you get through it… you don’t have to walk alone.”

I started chemotherapy and all this time I had a toddler. I just wanted him to be a kid. I didn't want him to see his mom sick.

I wanted to stay strong for him. I was employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina, and they made life wonderful for me or helped as much as they could.

Not just my coworkers, not just my team, I'm talking about human resources. They were there to help me so that I could be a mom.

You do not walk alone through the journey of cancer. Blue Cross is more than just healthcare.

They are a helping hand.

[Alex Shelton-Brabham]

Even when I had to call in a customer service, they're there to show empathy and and support you through your journey. They're there to help you get authorizations and help you to find the resources that you need.

I wasn't just another number, I was a human being. Blue Cross North Carolina, they took the financial burden off of me so that I could focus on my son, so I could focus on my family, so I could focus on my career and so I could focus on my healing.

[Alex Shelton-Brabham]

I'm still here. I'm here, I'm I survived, and I can help you get through it too. You don't have to walk alone.
